EDP was selected as the key expert partner to meet regulatory requirements and ultimately protect NSW SES volunteers.
EDP Consultants have been playing a critical role in supporting the NSW SES (State Emergency Service) by providing expert occupational hygiene services to ensure compliance with changing legislation. In particular, EDP’s work has focused on noise monitoring assessments, a requirement under Clause 58 of the NSW Work Health and Safety Regulation, which mandates regular audiometric testing for volunteers exposed to high noise levels.
EDP’s team, including Richard Bolton, Jon Rimas and Harleen Bhangoo and other professionals, demonstrated our responsiveness and adaptability, working closely with NSW SES volunteers to recreate real-world scenarios that reflect their day-to-day duties. These scenarios, such as those involving General Land Rescue, Storm Operations, Flood Operations, and Alpine Search & Rescue, allow EDP to gather precise data on noise exposure from equipment like hydraulic tools, chainsaws, and snowmobiles. Our proactive approach ensures that the SES meet their regulatory requirements while also protecting the hearing health of its members.
Through the collaborative efforts of EDP and the NSW SES, a comprehensive Hearing Conservation Program (HCP) has been developed, which includes baseline and follow-up hearing tests, a review of PPE, and noise reduction strategies. This program demonstrates EDP’s ability to provide specialised support and adapt to the evolving needs of SES operations, ensuring the well-being of its volunteers.
